The holidays can seem like a double-edged sword for many of us: we love the festive time, but we don’t love all the stress and chaos that goes along with it. How do you make sure you get more of the former and less of the latter? By taking care of yourself, of course. Remember these five tips:
Take the Stairs. You’re running around trying to get all your gifts together, buying groceries for the holiday festivities, taking the kids to the school concert . . . the list goes on and on. Don’t ask people to hold that elevator door, take the stairs. The elevator won’t save you time and taking the stairs gives you some time to breath along with a little cardio boost.
Wash Up. You probably have a long list of errands and a lot of places to go that are full of people—not too mention all the door handles you’ve touched. It’s flu Be more mindful about washing your hands regularly throughout the day and about being thorough while doing it. Say the alphabet to yourself while scrubbing and you’ll get the added benefit of a calm, focused moment.
Stick to your Exercise Routine. Hopefully, you have a regular exercise routine. Now is not the time to abandon it. With all the added stress and the temptation of decadent food and drink, you need that exercise more than ever. It will help you keep off the holiday pounds and cope with any holiday stress that comes your way.
Slow Down. Just because everyone else seems to be in a hurry, doesn’t mean that you need to be. In fact, rushing increases the incidence of accidents and injury. Before you know it, you could be looking at joint repair surgery and a long road of rehabilitation. That can turn the holidays into a time you’d rather forget. No one wants that. So, take your time. Be deliberate and extra careful—because others probably won’t be.
Wishing you a safe, festive and healthy holiday season!
